Paradise by Toni Morrison
RC 46272
In 1976, nine men from the all-black community of Ruby, Oklahoma attack a
former convent on the edge of town, which is the refuge of four female
outcasts. Various tragedies that have struck the townspeople motivate the
assault, which is intended to purge and protect the community. But it also
reveals dark secrets leading back to the town's origins in the 1890's. The
basis for this novel is] outrages that had been accumulating [such as]
four damaged infants, born in one family and brides disappearing on their
honeymoons. The one thing that connected all these catastrophes in the mind
of the town was in the Convent. As the novel begins deep in Oklahoma, The
nine men go to the convent believing that they are acting in defense of "the
one all-black town worth the pain," assault the nearby Convent and the women
in it. From the town's ancestral origins in 1890 to the fateful day of the
assault, the book tells the story of a people ever mindful of the
relationship between their spectacular history and a void where random and
organized evil erupted when and where it chose. The book weaves a powerful
mystery. Bestseller. Some descriptions of sex, some violence, and some
strong language
I have read several books by Toni Morrison. Each has been mysterious in
it's meaning. This one is the same for me. I'd love to hear other's
opinions on this book or any of her others. I love the way she writes, but
I still feel like I missed something. I also had to read this one slower
than I normally read a book. It's rather on the dark side. I won't give
this a number rating, sometimes I think a book just stands on it's own
merits.

The plot of this book just defines what I have said all along religion is a bad thing..
Extremests are, not religion in general. Yes, war is raging, but it's the extremest doing all the work.
Well, I'll give this one a look. Sounds quite historical.
